84-year-old Edith Macefeild made headlines and became a hero when she turned down a million-dollar offer on her home from a developer. The developer was building a huge shopping mall around where Macefield's home was located and wanted her property to build on, but when she absolutely refused to give in, the developer was forced to build around her house. What resulted is perhaps one of the strangest shopping malls I've ever seen, with Macefield's tiny home nestled into the side of the ginormous new building. If this story sounds familiar to you, that's because Macefield's story was the inspiration for the movie Up!
When Edith passed away, a friend of hers inherited the property. Unsure of what to do with it, the property was then sold to a real estate firm called Reach Returns. Reach Returns had some really ambitious plans for the property, hoping that they would be able to lift the house 30-feet off the ground. They managed to find some investors for the project and rebuilt the walls of the house before they sadly had to give up on the difficult plan because of cost. Tragically, the property was then foreclosed and possessed by the lender who had helped Reach Returns fund the project. In late March of 2015, there was a pending sale on the property.
Edith's story is one of the most remarkable I've ever heard when I consider the fact that the movie Up! has touched and inspired countless people across the globe. Her perseverance and determination to not give up on what she loves for a price tag sends a powerful message to the rest of us: there are much more important things in this life than money.
