Dawn lost her hearing 15 years ago at the mere age of 30 and has therefore never heard her 8-year-old son's voice. However, when faced with the option of cochlear implants, she faces a bit of anxiety about how the people she loves will actually sound compared to how she imagines they sound when lip-reading their words. However, all of Dawn's fears are assuaged the second her adorable little boy speaks and their first true conversation dissolves both of them into happy tears.
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a cochlear implant is an excellent option for individuals whose hearing loss is so severe that hearing aids don't work, bypassing the damaged cochlea and directly stimulating the auditory nerve. Dawn's successful treatment proves just how miraculous these implants can be, restoring a formerly nonexistent sense to individuals and allowing them to hear their family members speak again!
